My name is Siebe Burgerhout and I’m a full-stack developer at TodayTomorrow.
I’m currently a big fan of my Whoop. It gives me insight into my sleep, recovery, and energy levels, and helps me be more conscious about my health. Maybe a bit cliché, but I’m somewhat inspired by Bryan Johnson, the tech entrepreneur who is doing everything he can to live as long as possible. I’m not going as far as taking a hundred pills a day, buuut I do want to stay fit and healthy for as long as possible.
I think it’s incredibly cool to have the knowledge and power to bring digital products to life with nothing more than some typing, clicking, and thinking.
Visiting a simple website and immediately get bombarded with ads, banners, paywalls, and pop-ups screaming for your attention. I just want to read some dumb little article!
I’m from the picturesque town of Oud-Beijerland, just south of Rotterdam. Growing up, I was a scout and even worked as a harbour master for a while.
My first introduction to programming was in secondary school, during an elective science course in my first and second years. I worked with things like Scratch, Arduinos and my first programming concepts. I enjoyed it so much that I went on to take computer science as an extra subject, taught by an incredibly kind teacher who wore sandals with socks all year round. Having a programmer for a father also helped, I was exposed to programming from a very young age. I also used to play a lot of Minecraft and ran my own servers.
After that, I studied computer science at Rotterdam University of Applied Sciences for a while, where I became increasingly familiar with good coding principles. These days, I’ve fully embraced a more functional programming style (think Effect). I actually enjoy pretty much every aspect of the profession, from cloud services to APIs and databases, but what I enjoy most is thinking through complex problems and figuring out how to solve them.
I’m still finding my way through the different projects at the moment. Right now, I’m mainly spending a lot of time rewriting and simplifying code. In the long run, I hope to grow into someone who can keep complex systems structured, understandable and maintainable.
I get a huge amount of energy from building something, knowing that it works well, and making sure all the edge cases are covered. I also genuinely get excited about good libraries that improve the developer experience, such as Effect and Alchemy.
I’d love to win the lottery. Hahaha, just kidding. But I would genuinely love to go on a big, long-term trip around the world someday.
I’m a huge tea lover! Ever since I was little, I’ve had a cup of tea every evening at 8:00 PM. It used to be simple Pickwick tea, but my dad has since infected me with the “good tea virus,” so these days I only drink tea from specialty tea shops.
