Connecting parent and child from the very beginning, even before birth

As a parent, you quickly discover that the first 1,000 days are crucial to your child’s development—and this journey begins in the womb. But it can be difficult to translate these informations into (new) habits and actions in daily life. The founders of Buikpraat help scientist to translatetheir theoretical knowledge into practical exercises that fit into parents daily lives. Buikpraat asked us to develop a mobile app that allows the (expecting) parents to tune in and connect with their child through listening exercises and a comprehensive knowledge based information. The Buikpraat-program empowers expectant parents to build knowledge, confidence and new skills, helping them give tomorrow’s generation a gentle landing in this world.

What we learned from the users

Expectant parents

  • In our rational-centered society, intuitive parenting doesn’t come naturally

  • New parents often experience a lot of uncertainty, and they try to combat this with facts rather than seeking connection

  • The available knowledge on intuitive parenting isn’t accessible enough, especially for those with low literacy

  • Listening exercises are a powerful way to absorb information while needing to observe your body

Awareness at the heart of the design

In close collaboration with the founders, we set out to uncover the essence of the product. We soon realized that intuitive parenting revolves around awareness—specifically, the connection with your child even before birth. This understanding led us to place awareness at the core of our design. Our goal was to maximize parents' attention, not by directing their gaze to their phones, but by encouraging them to listen. This insight gave rise to the listening exercises, enabling new parents to keep their hands free to rest on their belly while observing their baby.

Developing a pilot product and beyond

First step before an official release was to develop a pilot version of the app. With Flutter, we were able to develop an app for both iOS and Android from a single codebase, greatly reducing development time and cutting down costs. Flutter’s versatile and powerful framework enabled us to deliver smooth, responsive performance and an experience that feels almost identical to native apps on both platforms. This streamlined approach allowed us to already included future technology, to be ready for the next phase.

Illustrations not to explain set the mood

To help parents turn their focus inward, we had Nick Liefhebber create illustrations that evoke a sense of introspection. Each theme was given its own "world," setting a tone that neither distracts nor unnecessarily stimulates. Everything was designed to direct attention where it’s most needed: on the connection with your child.

Layered information system

No one is the same. Thanks to research conducted by the founders, we gained a clear understanding of the different types of users. Some individuals seek more depth and background information, while others may be more reserved, and some prefer a more active approach. As a result, we created a layered information system. For those who wish to delve deeply, we provide access to all the scientific evidence available. If you prefer a more experiential approach, you can simply listen and engage at your own pace.

Word from the client

The team immediately connected with our vision and values, allowing them to create a concept that complements our goals and aspirations.

Project highlights

  • The minimum viable product was created in limited time for a pilot

  • Integrating custom illustrations into this app allowed us to craft a unique, engaging interface that elevates user interaction.

  • This app was designed only to be used in the background, doing audio guided exercises
