Autonomy and hierarchy

Designers & Doctors #5

Autonomy and hierarchy

😷 Doctor: “First the medical history, then the examination, then the diagnosis, then the treatment. Step by step.”

🤓 Designer: “I create a first version, test it, tear everything apart, and start again.”

Doctors work methodically according to proven protocols: symptoms → examination → diagnosis → treatment. This linear approach helps prevent errors that could cost lives. Designers, on the other hand, taste all the ingredients first, experiment with different flavors, and discover new combinations along the way. Their mantra: “Fail fast, learn faster.”

The problem arises when a doctor asks: “Why are you building when the concept isn’t finished yet?” Or when a designer gets impatient: “Three months of talking—can’t we just start already?”

The real strength lies in combining both approaches: linear planning for critical medical aspects, and iterative experimentation for the user experience. Because the best healthcare solutions emerge where safety and innovation meet.
